MNF FIRST INAUGURAL LEADERSHIP AWARENESS DAY
We at The Mony Nop Foundation enthusiastically kicked off our first official community event, Leadership Awareness Day, on April 30th, 2014 at Christensen Middle School in Livermore, CA. It truly was a spectacular and meaningful event! We invited more than 150 middle school students and 30 Livermore High School students to be part of this special program. Students involved in various campus activities – leadership, sports, music, drama, and other extra-curricular activities – were selected to participate in this program, as well as those students that could share their experiences and challenges in community events and work life. The Program Committee specifically designed the curriculum so that high school students could interact with the middle school students, sharing their personal experiences, the challenges they faced, and what they did to overcome them.
We asked the high school students to think about the question: “Knowing what I know now, what would I tell my middle school self?” Topics and ideas that were discussed included: being made aware of what being a leader really is, reviewing a variety of ways in which to be a leader, promoting self-confidence, discussing middle school fears and challenges, bullying, getting involved, venturing out, and promoting community service and the importance of giving back. Students began the day sporting their Leadership Awareness t-shirts and event bracelets featuring the event mantra, “Keep Calm….Lead On”, and danced energetically to spirited music. The rest of the day included question and answer time with a panel of high school students sharing their personal stories and small group discussions between both student groups. These activities were interspersed with movement activities including line dancing, cadence callouts, and “Get To Know You” bingo. Various students were also randomly selected to receive copies of the generously donated book, “Success for Teens: Real Teens Talk About Using the Slight Edge“.

In follow up to Leadership Awareness Day and in an effort to promote the concept of volunteerism, the Mony Nop Foundation also planned Pay It Forward Day. Pay It Forward Day was held on Saturday, May 10th from 9:30 to noon at Christensen Middle School as a campus clean-up day. Approximately 30 students volunteered by painting, picking up trash, cleaning classrooms, washing windows, and making leadership posters to be put up around campus. Clean up activities were followed by a pizza luncheon and root beer floats provided by Mony Nop. Leadership Awareness Day and Pay It Forward Day, sponsored by The Mony Nop Foundation, was funded by Mony Nop and many generous donations from within the community.
We so very much appreciate the support we have received! Our hope is to be able to bring this program to each middle school in Livermore once a year. It is the goal of the Mony Nop Foundation to reach out to our youth during their middle school years, so they begin to understand the significant role, importance, and responsibility they have in the community. With the right opportunities, education, mentorship, and support, we can empower our youth to make a difference in their own lives and in the lives of others.
